Woburn Abbey features on new ‘Phil Spencer’s Stately Homes’ series

In this new television series, Phil Spencer reveals his passion for historic houses on a grand tour of Britain's stately homes.

Woburn Abbey is one of the six houses that opened their doors to let viewers take a peek behind-the-scenes as part of this series. Uncovering the human stories behind the bricks and mortar and the logistical and technical challenges required to construct these houses, Phil reveals the hidden histories of our priceless heritage.

The Duke and Duchess of Bedford welcome Phil into their home so he can understand which family members shaped the house and grounds over the centuries. As custodians of one of the first stately homes to open to the public, the Duke and Duchess discuss the challenges they face today to ensure its preservation for future generations.

Sharing her vision for the Woburn Abbey Gardens the Duchess shows how she has worked with the gardens team to realise some of the designs made by Humphry Repton in his famous Red Book of 1804-5.

Join Phil as he delves into the archives discovering the extraordinary costs of building parts of the Abbey and some of the grand visions of its early inhabitants.

Meet some of today’s team at the Abbey and discover the day-to-day challenges they face in keeping it looking its best and ensuring the preservation of the remarkable art collections and interiors.

The series will be on air on More4 on Tuesdays from 9th August at 9pm, Woburn Abbey will feature on Tuesday 23rd August. The programme will be available on More4 Catch Up.
