The Woburn Park Woods Department

The Woburn Park Woods Department manage:

The commercial blocks: (1430 ha/3,500 acres) - the productive areas are split approximately 50/50 conifers and broadleaf trees.

The Evergreens: (67 ha/165 acres) - this area contains a commercial component of timber but is essentially a private area and contains many specimen and champion trees from around the world.

The woods are very varied and complex in nature and make up 20% of Bedfordshire's tree cover.

The Woburn Woods also contain two sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSI's), one major archaeological feature and a significant area classified as an 'ancient semi-mature woodland'. Woburn itself is also classified as a Conservation Area, with associated restrictions. The Woods are also a recreational facility of considerable importance. All of these factors need to be balanced when managing the Woodlands.

The Woburn Park farm

The Woburn Park Farms is spread across 4,000 acres and also has contract farms of over 500 acres nearby.

The farms are running on an arable rotation, growing cereals and combinable break crops plus an area of sugar beet. There is a small herd of 40 suckler cows kept for grazing surplus grass in the Bloomsbury Stud paddocks during the summer. Calves are sold at weaning.

The Bedford Estates london Property department

The Woburn Park London Estate in Bloomsbury, WC1, came into the family's ownership through the marriage of Lord William Russell, the son of the 5th Earl of Bedford, to the daughter of the Earl of Southampton in 1669 . The majority of the Estate was developed by the 4th and 5th Dukes of Bedford between the 1770's and the 1830's as Bloomsbury became a fashionable new residential district. In the late 19th century and early part of the 20th century the area lost popularity and many of the buildings were converted into office or hotel use. With reinvestment by the Estate the area is once again becoming a dynamic area of London.

The London Estate is run from the Estate office in Montague Street, built for the purpose in the 1840's overlooking the British Museum. The office is manned by a small team of chartered surveyors and support staff.

The Bloomsbury Stud

The name Bloomsbury Stud was registered in 1966, after the area of London owned and built by the Bedford family.

The 5th Duke was the originator of the family's interest in racing. He bred and raced three Derby winners, Skyscraper (1785), Eager (1791) and the only unnamed horse to win the Derby, known as Son of Fidget (1797).

In 1975, Lord and Lady Tavistock bought a mare called Mrs Moss (a bronze life-size statue of her by Philip Blacker stands in front of the house). She had fifteen foals, twelve of whom were winners, including Pushy (winner of the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot), Precocious (the unbeaten winner of six races, including the Gimcrack Stakes) and Jupiter Island (winner of fourteen races, including the Japan Cup, in which he broke the track record and became the first British-bred horse in the world to run one and a half miles in 2 minutes and 25 seconds).
