Over the past year we've held over 30 events in our Gardens and Deer Park and thousands of visitors toured the Abbey, eager to catch a glimpse of the dresses from hit TV show, Strictly Come Dancing. Now as 2013 is coming to a close, we are excited to share with you just some of the highlights from our 2014 programme. Further events and more information can be found on our events listing page.
There are two new exhibitions opening on the 11th April, when our main Summer season starts and the Abbey reopens for visitors. The first, 'Valiant Hearts: World War I - Woburn and its Stories' commemorates the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. This exhibition will tell the stories of the 11th Duke and Duchess, Woburn Abbey itself, and people from the surrounding area during the war. You will be able to see original records and letters sent to the Duke and Duchess in the Entrance to the Abbey, and find out what it was like to be trained at the local garrison or treated in the Woburn Military Hospital in the North Court.
Our second exhibition, 'Peeling Back The Years: Chinese Wallpaper at Woburn Abbey' will examine an element from the decorative history of the building and give you a chance to discover the story of the 4th Duke's bedroom through its layers of wallpaper. As you explore the Abbey you will be able to see how the wallpapers at Woburn illustrate the changing style of Chinese wallpapers, and learn how they were made, sold and hung. Both exhibitions will remain open until 28th September 2014.
Having won the Georgian Group Award for Restoration of a Georgian Garden or Landscape this year, we're not resting on our laurels in 2014 as plans to further enhance the Gardens continue. During the year we will be reconstructing the stone facade for the Cone House and installing a green oak walkway to the Rockery Pavilion, so there will always be something new to see during your visit. The Woburn Abbey Garden Show is back again for its 5th year, filling the Gardens with stalls, demonstrations and talks from horticultural experts. Invest in a season ticket and visit us every month for our series of Come and Grow events. Our gardeners will be on hand to talk you through a variety of seasonal tasks and join us for a free guided tour of the Gardens.
If you want to set yourself a physical challenge, then sign up for the Cycletta or Tri For Life. What better way to motivate yourself to get into shape for the new year than by raising money for some very deserving charities? The Woburn Abbey Country Fair is back in June for a weekend of fun filled country pursuits taking place in the beautiful surroundings of our Deer Park. Then make sure you don't miss our open air productions from the Pantaloons Theatre Company as they perform 'History of Britain' and 'The Tempest' in July.
On top of these we have countless study days, car rallies, historical re-enactments and more throughout the year. Keep an eye on our events page for more information in the coming weeks and months.
