Reviving Horticulture at Woburn Abbey Garden Show

Reviving Horticulture at Woburn Abbey Garden Show

On Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June, the Woburn Abbey Garden Show was back for its sixth year. This was by far, the biggest and best show yet.

On Friday 26th June, we welcomed Nick Coffer from BBC 3 Counties Radio. Nick’s show was broadcast live from 12-3pm onsite during the build of the garden show.  To listen to Nick's show please click here.

On Saturday 27th June we welcomed back gardening experts Martin Fish, BBC broadcaster and writer and Pippa Greenwood, panellist on BBC's Radio 4 and writer. They were joined by the fantastic Jonathan Moseley, Floral Expert on BBC's Big Allotment Challenge and founder of #flowertalk.

Sunday 28th June we welcomed our fourth gardening expert, Frances Tophill, Horticulturist and TV presenter on ITV's Love your Garden.

Over the whole weekend visitors were able to listen to one of the informative talks and demonstrations by the gardening experts, these were followed daily by a Q & A session - where visitors could take their gardening woes and find solutions to improve their gardens back home.

Our Head Gardener, Andrew Grout gave 3 complimentary gardening tours per day, giving the visitors the enhanced experience and understanding of the award-winning Woburn Abbey Gardens.

Our RHS qualified gardener, Doug Francis, gave demonstrations on seed sowing, propagation and able to answer the visitors general horticultural questions.

For this weekend only the Duke and Duchess of Bedford opened their 14 acres of private gardens, usually out-of-bounds to the public.

Over the two days, visitors were able to purchase some of the most weird and wonderful plants from some of the top UK growers. Outdoor living, garden care, lifestyle, gift and food exhibitors were also on display offering quality items that are not readily available in the shops.

Also over the weekend, visitors were able to see the fantastic competition entries for a number of horticultural competitions. The wheelbarrow gardens – a local lower school competition to encourage young green fingers! Winner: Eversholt Lower School. The Cut Flower competition – a display this year themed as Woburn Deer, florists were issued a set of deer antlers to use in their displays. Winner: Fleurette. Not forgetting the horticultural Cube Exhibition – a 1 metre x 1 metre box with open front and top with a number of horticultural criteria to adhere to. Winner: Caddington Gardening Club.

The area that caused a bit of a stir, was our beard art test run. Fleurette one of our competing florists was invited (as last years winner) to help decorate a beard which we would photograph at this years show, with the view to run a floristry competition in 2016, the Floristry Beard Art Display.

The new food options were welcomed. The Duchess’ Tea Room was offering sandwiches and simple hot foods whilst the new Bedford Tea Room was offering afternoon teas and cream teas. The Sculpture Gallery opened its doors for the second year running with a 2 course option for just £15.

Lastly, our VIP’s thoroughly enjoyed the VIP ticket option on Sunday 28th June which included pastries and refreshments in the private area of the Abbey with host, the Duchess of Bedford, a exclusive VIP tour with our Estates Gardens Manager Martin Towsey, a tasty 2 course lunch in the Sculpture Gallery, use of our VIP area with free refreshments with attendant and of course all of the usual Garden Show attractions. Our VIP Poda area was a fantastic structure provided by the Poda Company, for more details click here.
